History : Heroes ~ Key Figures ~ Historial Data ~ USCC Women ~ Hospitality ~ Medical Care ~ Delegate Duties
When considering the tabulation of supplies donated and their associated monetary value, it is important to view the numbers in relative value and amounts to the times of the 1860’s.
The population of the country was about 1/10 what it is today, 30 million vs. 300 million. A bible cost 7 cents, an average soldier was paid $13.00/month, a state of the art military rifle cost about $12.00.
Monetary values listed are about 100-150 times more in today’s dollar value. The dollar value is most striking. Over $6,000,000 contributed and donated in the 1860’s is valued today to be between $600-$900 million dollars in four years, almost 1 billion dollars!
This is why General Sherman called these contributions “One of the wonders of the world”
They distributed over:
- 1.46 million bibles
- 39 million pages of bible tracts
- 8.9 million religious knapsack books
- 18 million christian newspapers
- 1.4 million hymn books and psalm books
- 7 million+ pages of stationary and envelopes for letter writing
- $4 million worth of stores including food, medical aid and clothing
